Hiroshige’s Drawers
2'x2'x.5', dresser drawer, photocopies, and light, 1991
Artist was impressed with the antiquated character of much Japanese farming, somewhat reminescent of the Limbourg Brothers “Book of Hours” from the 1400s and Hiroshige’s Ukiyo-e prints of over 160 years ago. He made photocopies of Hiroshige prints and his own countryside photos and mixed them together.
Title refers to “walking in Hiroshige’s shoes” or “drawers.”
The sculpture is constructed inside an old dresser drawer.
